Barnard married Anna (Annah) Stewart on November 3, 1757 in Kingston, NH. Anna was born on Halloween 1736 in Kingston, and was said to be a descendant of the Stewarts of Scotland. They lived in Amesbury until about 1787 before moving to Sanbornton, NH.
Barnard saw service in the revolutionary war. He was in the Massachusetts Militia as 1st Lieutenant, and was raised to Major after the war on September 8, 1782 (a recommendation made by Brigadier General Jonathan Titcomb to John Hancock) (Reference: Massachusetts soldiers and sailors of the Revolutionary War. Volume 8). He also served as a selectman in Amesbury in 1777.
In Amesbury they lived on "Hoyt Hill" or "Hoyt's Hill".
Anna outlived Barnard by 22 years and was said to be "A spirited woman, who at ninety used to ride to meeting on horseback." (Reference Genealogical history of the Duncan Stuart Family in America)
Children of Barnard and Anne Hoyt were:
1. Barnard born May 10, 1758; married Mary Nichols, June 6, 1780. He moved to Sanbornton, N. H. about 1794, his father and brothers having moved there before that time. He died in Concord, N. H., Dec. 18, 1839. Mary died in 1849 or '50.
2. Anne born Jan. 19, 1763; married Ebenezer Colby, Dec. 26, 1782.
3. Betsy born Nov. 18, 1766; married Zebulon Smith.
4. Stuart born Nov. 17, 1768; married Elizabeth Burleigh; lived in Sanbornton; died about 1853 or '54. Wife Eliz. died about 1840.
5. Samuel born Oct. 19, 1771 went to Canada in 1801.
6. Mary (Molly) born March 30, 1775; married Elisha Smith.
7. Hannah born Nov. 12, 1776; married Edward Ladd, of Gilmanton.
8. Sally born Sep 2, 1782; married 1st, Benj. Morgan, 2d, Eben. Badger, and 3 d, Nathaniel Burleigh.
Barnard died Jan 8, 1810. Anna died in Dec 1832, and at 96, was one of the oldest persons in Sanbornton.
