John & Mary Erwin

John Erwin, my wife's 5th great grandfather and father of Thomas Erwin was born about 1760, likely in Augusta, VA.  His father was living in the area around that time which makes the birth location likely.  Most of John's history comes from Probate records of Old Virginia such as wills and land agreements.  His wife is mentioned as "Mary".  It is thought in some family histories that her last name may have been Bell, or possibly Harrison, or Hogsett.  I have not found it.  The Augusta, VA area was settled by Scotch-Irish settlers from which the Erwins were descended.  Several generations of John's ancestors had lived in Augusta.

John and Mary lived in Augusta County, VA for their entire lives along with a large extended family.  Their children were:
Thomas (1784), Margaret (1780), Edward (1777), Mary (1779), Jean, and James.

John died in 1814.  Mary's death year is not know.  Their graves are likely gone.  The family's cemetery was said to have been "ploughed-under".
