Thomas I. Smith was born in New York in 1774. Thomas is my wife's 4th great grandfather, and father of Jane Smith. He primarily lived in Greenville, NY which is upstate New York just south of Albany. Thomas married Cornelia Clow sometime about 1795. Cornelia was born in 1773 in Dutchess, New York in 1773.
Together they had at least three children; Susan, Anna, and Jane. Thomas died Sept 13, 1838 and is buried in Greenville with his wife who died Oct 17, 1858
Not much else is known about either Thomas or Cornelia. This research is based substantially on reports from other family trees which are not referenced. Because of the weakness in the data, I will not pursue this branch of the family any further.
The name Smith originates in England and is extremely prevalent in Great Britain, the US and Canada. Smith was also a common name taken by immigrants to the US because they wanted to have American names. I don't think this is the case with our family since this branch of the family arrived in America before the US was formed.
