Catharine Grogan, My wife's Great Great Grandmother, and mother of Henry T. Barker, was born in Albany county, NY on Dec 12, 1823. She lived on a farm in Westerlo, NY with her parents and grandparents. She was baptized at Christ Church Episcopal in nearby Greenville on Aug 8, 1825, and was one of 12 children in the family.
At age 17 she married Nathaniel Barker in Albany, on Sept 14, 1841. Nathaniel was a carpenter at the time but soon after turned to farming. Throughout the next 25 years they continued to live in the Albany area including in the towns of Bethel and Hunter. About 1865, they relocated to Illinois, and 20 years after that moved to Nebraska.
She and Nathaniel raised 11 children, 8 of which survived to adulthood. Nathaniel died in Nebraska in 1898. Catharine lived until the age of 87. She lived for a time with her son Thomas and his children, and later with her son Alonzo and his children (See Nathaniel C. Barker for a picture of the Alonzo Barker farm).
She died Jan 17, 1911 and is buried in Fairmont, NE.
Above is a photo of the 1860 Census showing Catharine and family living in Hunter, NY
Below is a photo of her headstone in Fairmont, NE (I have several sources that indicate 1823 as her birth year).
Sorry about all the photos of headstones on this blog....its part of the nature of genealogy
