John Taylor Gilman Howard & Lucinda Hall

Postcard of a Quarry in Dorset, VT
John T. G. Howard, father of Don Alonzo Howard, and my 4th great grandfather was born on April 1800 in the town of Dorset, Vermont.  The country's first commercial marble quarry was opened in South Dorset in 1785.  Marble was quarried there and at several local sites for over 130 years.  John lived in the Dorset and nearby Chester, VT until after 1850.

He married Arralucia (Arrilucia) Chandler on August 6 1821 in Chester.  They had 7 children; Alfred, Addison, Charles, Sewall, Henry, Susan, and Frances.  Arralucia passed away October 7, 1839.

In 1840 John married Lucinda Hall born about 1802 in Windsor county, VT.  They had 4 children; John, Don Alonzo, Mary, and Samuel.  John and Samuel died as infants.  I have not found whether Lucinda passed away or they were divorced.

John later lived with (possibly married) Mary Burbanks in 1870.  There is a report of a child named Milan from this union.

John was listed as a laborer and as a farmer on different reports.  He died Feb 22, 1879 in Bridgewater, VT.
