Rufus Cox & Cecilia Clayton

Typical Missouri farm in 1877
Rufus Clay, my wife's 3rd Great Grandfather and father of Frances I. Cox, was born in Vermont about 1820.  It is likely that he moved to Missouri at a very early age.  He married Cecilia Clayton of Kentucky in Clay county, Missouri on March 31, 1844.  By 1850 Cecilia was living in Gallatin, Clay co, Missouri with their two children, Frances (5) and Augustus (4).  Rufus does not appear on the 1850 census or any subsequent records.  I believed he died between 1846 and 1850.

In 1860 Cecilia married Andrew Spry from Ohio.  She and Andrew lived in Lewis, Grant, and Pickering counties in Missouri and were married for 44 years.  They are listed as Farmers in all records.  She had two more children with Andrew, Mary and Simon.

Cecilia died March 6, 1904 in Pickering, Missouri at 80 years of age.  Andrew passed away the following June.
