William Higgins & Lucinda Ferrell

William Higgins, My 3rd Great Grandfather and father of Mary Ann Higgins, was born in Quebec in 1842.  He married Lucinda Ferrell of Vergennes, Vermont Dec 18, 1864.  Lucinda was born in Wilmington, NY in July of 1845.  Wilmington was settled about 1800 and its location in the Adirondacks was idea for Rye farming which soon led to distilleries.  Wilmington supplied much of the liquor for the soldiers in the war of 1812.

William and Lucinda lived in Vergennes, Vt most of their lives.  He worked as a carpenter.  She tended the house.  From information on the census of 1870, it appears that William was deaf, and was unable to read or write.  They had five children, Almon, Mary Ann, Carrie, William, and Charles.

William died in 1898.  His headstone, located in Rutland, is shown below.

Lucinda eventually moved to nearby Ira, Vt and lived with her youngest sons William and Charles who were farmers until her death Feb 4, 1917 at the age of 71.
