Frances I. Cox

Frances I. Cox was born in Missouri 0n April 2, 1845 likely in Clay county where she was living in 1850 with her mother Cecilia and her brother Augustus.  She was my wife's Great Great Grandmother and mother of Matilda Jane Evans.  The town she grew up in was Gallatin which was notable for two memorable episodes in American History.  The first was the start of the Missouri mormon war of 1838 which resulted in the death of dozens, mostly Mormons.  Above is a rendition of the Election day fight which set off the hostilities.  The other event was the robbery and murder at the Daviess County Savings Association in 1869 by Jessie James which was the act that marked the emergence of Jessie James as the most famous of the post civil war outlaws.  Jessie and Frank James were raised in Clay county, and Frank was tried in the courthouse in Gallatin.

In 1862 she married John Evans from Kentucky, and by 1870 they had moved to Nebraska when new lands were opened.  They raised 6 children, Matilda, Agatha, Kitura,  James, Charles, and Robert.  Her husband worked as a blacksmith and then as a farmer.  John, who was 25 years her senior, died in 1893.  Frances lived in Sterling, NE until her death in 1916
