John F. Allen is my wife's Great Great Grandfather and Father of Charles E. Allen. He was born in Warren, Vermont in 1834. Warren was (and is) a small town in central Vermont. When John grew up he moved to new lands in Minnesota, buying 160 Acres in Waseca county in 1859. The area was just being settled with the first settler arriving in 1854. Below is a photo of the document formally acknowledging the granting of land to John F. Allen sign by President James Buchanan (or more likely his Secretary) in 1859. The land was in Iosco Township, in Waseca County, Minnesota.
On Sept 23, 1861 (at about 27 years old), John enlisted in the Union Army and fought with "E" company, 1st Infantry, Wisconsin Regiment. During his time as a union soldier he fought in the following engagements: The Battle of Perryville, Battle of Stone's River, Tullahoma Campaign, Battle of Chickamauga, Siege of Chattanooga, and the start of the Atlanta Campaign (under General Sherman). He was mustered out May 28, 1864, during the Atlanta Campaign. He was likely wounded or affected by disease b/c he filed for an injured soldier pension in March of 1865.
On Christmas day 1864 he married Sarah Anne Wheeler (born in NY). Together they had 4 children, Jane (Jennie), George, Charles, and Clara. The family stayed in Minnesota until about 1883 when they moved to Kansas and then to Spokane where they appear in 1900. They lived on Holly RD, Beacon Ave, and Garden springs (The latter may have been the home where Otto was born).
He died in 1907 and is buried in Spokane.
