Herbert worked around railroads his whole life. He started as a laborer at the freight yard and then worked as the baggage man for the railroad at the Central Station House. His time working at the railroad spanned 38 years. Even his childhood home was right adjacent to the railroad tracks at 21 Stanley Ave.
On September 18, 1897 he married Ruhammer Adeline Manley from Wareham, Mass (which is at the entrance to Cape Cod). He was 25 and she 21. Their children were Harrison, Edna, Isabelle, Jane, Gertrude, Ruhammer, Dora, Effie, Martha, and Bertha (oldest to youngest).
He resided in Taunton until his death in about 1939.
